(Bangui, July 8, 2026 | LNC) You cannot take a step in the Central African Republic without someone speaking to you about religion; like all impoverished nations, it is a deeply religious country. Consequently, when a member of the clergy is killed there, the resulting shock is immense. In Zémio—located in the Haut-Mbomou region in the southeast—unidentified gunmen assassinated a priest in what appears to be a targeted killing: Father Crépin Martial Monga. He had been working tirelessly to foster calm since arriving in Zémio two years ago. Bishop Aurelio Gazzera said of him: "We spoke on Saturday about the recent clashes that had taken place in Zémio. He was calm... Father Crépin worked hard on dialogue, peace efforts, and securing the release of hostages still held by rebel groups. We fear this was a targeted assassination—an attempt by someone to block the few efforts being made to achieve peace and reconciliation. However, we do not have more specific details. He was originally from Bangassou. He was very young—having served as a priest for five years—and was doing excellent work. He was the focal point for dialogue as well as for the refugee crisis."
