The state of the roads in Bangui: the case of the 5th arr.
By Marie VERGEAUX | LNC
(Bangui, 15 June 2026 – LNC) People talk of Bangui as a ‘dump’ when they look at the state of the city, but the problem really hits home when one considers the state of its roads, for example, the road linking the Abel Goumba roundabout in the 5th arrondissement to Bangui M’Poko Airport, which is, after all, a strategic route, is in an unspeakable state, potholed everywhere; the road is now almost impassable for vehicles, with the exception of motorbikes, and even then. Between piles of rubbish, a lack of drains and flooding during the rainy season, it’s a complete mess. Local residents may well complain about the road’s deterioration, but nothing changes; the authorities’ inaction, as they turn a blind eye, does nothing to help; still in the 5th arrondissement, Ruth Roland Avenue and, above all, Omar Bongo Avenue — which links Bangui M’Poko Airport to the Abel Goumba junction — are now in a pitiful state, and the causes are manifold: no gutters, no sewers, no maintenance for several years, compounded by repeated flooding and insecurity. Getting around this area is now an obstacle course for motorists and pedestrians alike. A local resident says: “The road linking the 5th arrondissement to the airport is a major route, but it has been neglected for years. The road is littered with rubbish and, at the slightest sign of rain, it becomes impassable due to the lack of drains. We are calling on the government to consider its rehabilitation. ” As for people with disabilities, it’s a lost cause, according to one of them: “The condition of the road linking the Goumba roundabout to the airport is very worrying. During the rainy season, it becomes completely impassable. I, for example, am a person with a disability. If it rains, I can sometimes be stuck at home for a whole week, unable to reach the tarmac. It is a strategic road, but it has been neglected. That is why I wholeheartedly ask the government to consider rehabilitating this road. ”
