Dead City Day
By Fernando CANCIO l LNC
(Bangui on October 8, 2026 the LNC) This Thursday, October 8, gathered in a consortium, the associations OGDC and I_GWÉ oni in front of the press in Bangui, called for a "dead city" day against the rise in fuel prices, scheduled for Monday, October 12, 2026, from 4 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This call comes a few days after the entry into force of the new price schedule for hydrocarbons, where the price per liter of gasoline increased from 1,050 to 1,150 FCFA for individuals, while that of diesel jumped to 1,400 FCFA, against 1,250 FCFA previously.
For the OGDC and I_GWÉ Consortium, this decision of Touadéra and his government was taken without any consultation with the parties concerned, and these increases risk accentuating the economic difficulties faced by Central African households.
As Ngouando, the coordinator of the I_GWÉ platform, points out: "This is a decision that was made without consultation of the various parties. So the government chose to ignore the chaotic situation of the people."
Let’s say that this dead city day mainly concerns civil servants, shopkeepers, students, taxi and motorcycle-taxi drivers as well as other users directly affected by the increase in fuel costs.
The purpose of this maneuver is to withdraw the new increase in hydrocarbon prices, with a return to a level below 900 FCFA per litre.
They then call for the opening of a transparent consultation framework bringing together economic actors in the oil sector, civil society organizations, trade unions and users. And also, demand the detailed publication of the fuel price structure, including the various taxes, applied margins, and actual supply costs. In short, they are asking for transparency, in an area that was not.
