William Freddy Kalmame, Dismissed by Decree

(Bangui, October 21, 2026 | LNC) Amidst criticism regarding the government’s negative stance on the "dead city" (general strike) day, a dissenting voice emerged from within the government itself. Speaking on Radio Ndeke Luka, William Freddy Kalmame Ndjapou—an advisor to Faustin Touadéra on legal reform and the monitoring of the electoral process—expressed his strong disapproval of the government's position. This proved to be a costly move, as President Touadéra promptly dismissed him via a decree signed on Monday, October 19.
The decision comes three days after the official made his remarks.
In his statement, William Ndjapou denounced the arrest of civil society leaders, noting that the detentions had allegedly taken place without the President’s knowledge. "…The public prosecutor does not acknowledge having ordered the arrests of these individuals… This indicates that we are dealing with an irregular situation. I wish to emphasize that President Touadéra is a man of justice, a man of peace. Such actions do not originate from him. There are people in the Head of State’s inner circle who believe they are doing him a favor or pleasing him by arresting these individuals—and to that, I say no!" he stated on Friday, October 16, while calling for the release of the civil society leaders.
Other voices within the presidential camp had also criticized the arrests, including Special Advisor Fidèle Gouandjika and Minister-Controller Roméo Gribingui.
This decision suggests that the Head of State is perhaps not as detached from these events as it might appear.
