Haut-Mbomou: FACA and Russians Exchange Fire

By Valéry MANSFIELD | LNC

(Bangui, June 25, 2026 | LNC) Last night, around 8:00 PM, violent clashes broke out in the town center of Zémio, in the southeastern Central African Republic, between the Central African Armed Forces (FACA) and their allies—Russian mercenaries from the Wagner Group—plunging the local population into terror. These hostilities stem from the fact that the two forces are increasingly unable to tolerate one another; this new development significantly complicates the regional security situation. A precarious calm has returned for the moment, but total uncertainty hangs over how the situation will unfold. The provisional casualty count indicates that a female civilian was killed—likely by a stray bullet—and two FACA soldiers were seriously wounded. We are awaiting further information on this matter; in the meantime, President Touadéra’s security arrangements are in a state of disarray.
