Touadéra received the new UNHCR country representative

(Bangui, 25 February 2026 – LNC) On 23 February 2026, Touadéra received Williams Chemaly, the new country representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), in audience. Naturally, the two officials discussed the situation of refugees in the Central African Republic, particularly that of repatriated Central Africans. “This year we are embarking on an initiative to support Central African citizens living in exile. 60,000 of these Central Africans require on-the-ground support. In the return zones, there must be sufficient services to accommodate them. That is why we must transform these return zones into development hubs that form part of the National Development Plan,” said the UN official. The two men also discussed the possibility of Central Africans returning to their country of origin. They also reviewed the collaboration that has enabled Sudanese refugees to be welcomed onto Central African territory. “This collaboration aims to create conditions conducive to the settlement of the 75,000 repatriated Central Africans,” states the presidential communiqué.
