Grevaï, a village in ruins

(Kaga-Bandoro, 31 May 2026 – LNC) Grevaï, just 35 kilometres from Kaga-Bandoro, is virtually cut off from the world. Between the lack of road access, the absence of medical facilities and the lack of access to drinking water, the inhabitants are truly enduring a daily ordeal. It takes nearly three hours to cover the 35 kilometres between Kaga-Bandoro and Grévaï – that says it all.... In the dry season, the journey already takes three hours; in the rainy season, it simply takes twice as long. Furthermore, on this devastated track, accidents are frequent and the evacuation of the sick becomes a test of survival. For Milaine, a local resident, the state of the road is the primary obstacle to the right to healthcare. “When it rains, the road becomes very dangerous. When transporting patients to Kaga-Bandoro Hospital, motorbikes often crash and the patients suffer twice over. It’s a real problem. I hope the government will look after us, the mothers and our children,” she says. While the road is deadly, the lack of medical facilities in the commune makes the situation worse. The Grévaï health centre has the buildings, but lacks qualified staff. According to Sabah Eliazar, group leader in the first district, “Due to a lack of proper care, a pregnant woman recently lost her baby before dying herself. We are asking the government to urgently assign a midwife to Grévaï to look after expectant mothers.” More than just the health crisis, it is the entire basic infrastructure that is lacking. The telephone network is virtually non-existent, as is access to drinking water, forcing families to walk long distances, and young people lack training centres. The mayor of the municipality, Ramagui Norbert, sums up the difficulties: “We face many problems: deteriorating roads, no telephone network, a lack of drinking water and no youth centre. I would like to take this opportunity to ask the government and our partners to support us. ” And the sad thing is that this is not an isolated case.
