Huayi Investment’s Conduct Under Scrutiny

(Bangui, June 26, 2026 | LNC) The Central African Republic possesses vast underground mineral wealth, yet it is poorly exploited. Typically, at the start of Cabinet meetings, President Touadéra—without consulting anyone—decides based on his own interests to award contracts to specific parties, often without any feasibility study. In this environment, anything can happen—as seen in the communes of Zotoua-Banguerem and Yoro-Samba-Bogoulo, where residents have voiced their dissatisfaction regarding the consequences of mining operations conducted by Huayi Investment. Through this mobilization, they hope to draw the authorities' attention to what they view as the gradual degradation of their living environment. Specifically, the Chinese company’s operations have reportedly caused soil degradation, the deterioration of certain agricultural areas, and negative impacts on natural resources relied upon daily by local communities. Protesters also cite concerns regarding the preservation of waterways and the region's environmental balance. Beyond these ecological concerns, the local population is demanding adherence to the terms of the agreement binding the company to the community. They believe that commitments made regarding local development—particularly concerning community infrastructure, employment, and improved living conditions—have yet to yield visible results on the ground. Since these populations are not being listened to, the situation feels like a waste of time.
