Illegal Checkpoints on the Bangui-Mbaïki Road
By Sophie HERVOUET | LNC
(Bangui, July 24, 2026 | LNC) Despite the very poor condition of the Bangui-Mbaïki road, complaints from transporters and travelers are mounting due to illegal checkpoints set up by motorized gendarmes, according to numerous accounts from road users. These illicit practices reportedly force drivers to pay money at various checkpoints—essentially extortion. This situation drives up the cost of the journey for any traveler daring enough to make the trip. Naturally, the relevant authorities have decided to take action. A mission has been deployed to the field with the aim of identifying those responsible for these practices, dismantling the illegal checkpoints, and restoring compliance with regulations along this road corridor. Above all, it was necessary to restore user confidence in the security forces, whose primary mission is to protect people and property while ensuring the free movement of individuals and goods. So, an end had to be put to the extortion. As for actually repairing the road—that wasn't even considered.
