Justice: A Test of Credibility?

(Bangui, August 4, 2026 | LNC) The Bangui Court of Appeal opened its first criminal session of 2026 yesterday. Over the course of nearly a month, the court will hear around thirty cases involving more than forty defendants, including one woman. The docket for this session includes charges such as rape, murder, armed robbery, and the embezzlement of public funds. The defendants come from the Ngaragba and Camp de Roux detention centers and the Bimbo women's prison, where they had been held in pre-trial detention. This criminal session was highly anticipated following several postponements; in previous attempts, numerous cases had been adjourned due to irregularities raised by defense lawyers. Beyond the fate of the accused, these hearings represent a major test for the credibility of the Central African judicial system, which is often perceived internationally as being beholden to the ruling power. The verdicts handed down in the coming weeks will therefore be scrutinized with the utmost attention.
