New Government, Military Protests
By Isabelle DUTHEIL | LNC
(Bangui, 26 May 2026 – LNC) When Touadéra announced his new government by decree last Thursday, it was clear that he had not made everyone happy – certainly not among the civilian population, but also, unexpectedly... among the military. During the night of Thursday to Friday, soldiers in the Boy Rabe district, located in Bangui’s fourth arrondissement, fired into the air for hours to express their discontent. In response, the authorities deployed the Presidential Guard and Russian mercenaries. The troops’ anger was focused primarily on the retention of the Defence Minister, a paramilitary figure and former customs official, whose management of the army has not been without criticism. It is only a matter of time before other groups rise up to protest. Pandora’s box has been opened.
