MINUSCA Extended for One Year
By Antoinette KODROGUÉ | LNC
(Bangui, October 22, 2026 | LNC) Meeting in New York, the UN Security Council has officially extended the mandate of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) until November 15, 2026. The text of Resolution 2800 received broad support—adopted with 14 votes in favor and one abstention—confirming an international consensus on the indispensable role of UN peacekeepers in the region, despite occasionally tense budgetary discussions.
This routine extension validates the strategy championed by Valentine Rugwabiza, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in the Central African Republic. Addressing diplomats, the head of MINUSCA presented a nuanced yet encouraging assessment: on one hand, tangible political progress, highlighted by the disarmament of over 1,900 former combatants and the installation of local elected officials in the majority of communes; on the other, a delicate territorial transition that requires "reorganizing the mission’s footprint without disengaging" prematurely.
The mandate, renewed under Resolution 2800, maintains its core strategic priorities:
• The absolute protection of civilians, which remains the heart of the mission.
• The extension of state authority, particularly in mining areas and transhumance corridors.
• The securing of borders—especially in the northeast and southeast—where the repercussions of regional crises (notably the conflict in Sudan) pose significant threats of destabilization. By setting this new deadline for the end of 2026, the UN also requests that the Secretary-General—in close consultation with the Central African government—plan the framework for a future, gradual transfer of security responsibilities to the national armed forces (FACA).
