(Bangui, August 22, 2026 | LNC) Speaking through its spokesperson, Albert Yaloké Mokpeme, the government expressed concern and called for urgent measures in response to the surge in traffic accidents in the Central African Republic. This statement was made during a press conference held on Wednesday, August 19, in Bangui. Indeed, for several months, roads in the Central African Republic have been the scene of frequent accidents involving both motor vehicles and motorcycle taxis. The human toll is heavy, with fatalities, serious injuries, and overwhelmed hospitals. All of this highlights persistent shortcomings regarding adherence to traffic laws and traffic regulation. Albert Yaloké Mokpeme did not mince his words: "Traffic police also need to seriously verify whether all drivers—whether of motorcycles or cars—hold a valid license, know how to drive, and have insurance. Because you are right: almost all of us are either drivers or passengers." He emphasized the need for regular checks and drastic measures: "When measures are adopted, we must ensure we have the means to enforce them. I believe the government has been sufficiently alerted to this: urgent action must be taken." He cited awareness campaigns conducted in other countries, noting: "The road kills; it is a danger. People do not respect traffic laws, speed limits, or traffic lights. Today, it has become a scourge." » He criticized the behavior of motorcycle taxi drivers, who are often accused of disregarding all rules: "They believe they have the right of way over everyone else, even though everyone is required to obey traffic laws." He also discussed the consequences and the severity of the situation, which is evident in the strain on healthcare facilities. Hospitals in Bangui and the provinces are overwhelmed with accident victims. "Passengers themselves often fail to realize their lives are at risk. In a road dispute, they might verbally abuse the driver without grasping the dangers involved." Finally, he added: "The roads kill, yet people don't realize it. Everyone needs to become aware of their own responsibility." In conclusion, the government plans to take swift action; through a combination of stepped-up checks, awareness campaigns, and strict enforcement of regulations, the goal is clear: to reduce the number of accidents and save lives.
