Price Surge in the CAR

(Bangui, July 23, 2026 | LNC) As is well known, the Central African Republic is a landlocked country; it therefore relies on the condition of its roads. This is precisely where the problem lies: the road conditions range from appalling to unspeakable. The logical consequence is a surge in the prices of basic necessities—take the town of Boda, for instance, located over 192 kilometers from Bangui in the Lobaye region. The road from Bangui to Boda has been in poor condition for over 15 years, and as one local resident put it: "We complain to the authorities in vain." Yet, the movement of goods depends on road conditions; in the case of Boda, the road has received no maintenance and is in a critical state. The situation has deteriorated further with the arrival of the rainy season. Heavy rainfall has simply rendered several sections impassable. To get an idea of ​​the price hikes: soap, previously sold for 200 CFA francs, now costs 300 francs. The price of sugar has jumped from 500 to 1,000 CFA francs, while the price of oil has risen from 1,000 to 1,300 CFA francs—an astonishing increase. Returning to the situation in Boda, residents have called on the authorities to quickly begin road rehabilitation work, but to no avail.
