UN Security Council deliberates on the CAR

(Bangui, June 23, 2026 | LNC) There is a flurry of activity at the UN regarding the Central African Republic. After a decade-long presence, MINUSCA and its deployed peacekeepers are not exactly leaving; however, driven by budget cuts, the mission must reorganize into a rapid reaction force capable of deploying to hotspots where fighting breaks out. It must also hand over its bases to the Central African government. Yet, a pressing question arises: is the country ready to take over? This is a massive challenge, especially given the presence of Russian mercenaries who act independently and seemingly pursue their own agenda, alongside the FACA—who are poorly paid, poorly led, and undisciplined—and the fact that the state does not control its entire territory. This Tuesday, the Central African Republic is on the Security Council's agenda—as it is every four months—coinciding with the release of the MINUSCA report on the country's status, and the Secretary-General is providing an assessment of the situation in the CAR.
