Women's Basketball Championship Resumes in Bangui

(Bangui, July 6, 2026 | LNC) Since independence, the Central African Republic has never held a national championship in any sport; everything takes place in Bangui. The reasons likely include a lack of air transport options and, certainly, the deplorable state of the road infrastructure. Thus, it was hardly a surprise to learn that, after a two-season hiatus, the Bangui Basketball League’s women's championship resumed on Friday, July 3, 2026, at the Martin Ngoko National Basketball Center. Naturally, the relaunch required a ceremony attended by officials from the Central African Basketball Federation and the league, as well as players and numerous fans. It was also an opportunity for some cheap, performative patriotism. Prince Pingama Vicko, President of the Bangui Basketball League, delivered a speech praising the efforts of the federal women's commission and the commitment of the women's basketball patron, Rosine Bela Eyebe, to promoting the sport. "I would like to thank the patron for her work, as well as the entire federal women's committee for their efforts in developing women's basketball." For her part, Rosine Bela Eyebe offered the customary remarks: "As the patron of women's basketball in the Central African Republic—and in keeping with the commitment I made to the Federation and League presidents—I will cover the full cost of fees for referees and match officials, based on the budget presented to me. This amounts to 1,023,000 CFA francs." And, since there is no limit to the absurdity, the season was officially launched with an exhibition match pitting Zarasclo against the Carrefour du Basketball Centrafricain (CBC). For the record, CBC won with a score of 31–19. It is worth noting that this women's championship comprises only 12 teams.
